Stampede in Haridwar

November 6 - November 10 , 2010 - Around five million people were set to gather in Haridwar to propagate the sacred "Gayatri Mantra" in an event that organizers say will rival the Kumbh Mela.

The whos who of politics, religion, films attended the function held to commemorate the Centenary celebration of Pandit Shri Ram Sharma Acharya who dedicated his life to popularizing "Gayatri mantra", the foremost mantra in Hinduism whose chanting is said to remove obstacles and increase wisdom and spiritual growth. The syllables of the mantra are said to positively affect all the chakras, or energy centres, in the human body.

People from all over the country came to perform a huge yagna on the occassion. As the crowd swelled near the yagna premises, people fell on the ground mostly women and children and lead to a disastrous stampede. A large number of people are injured and some lost their lives that day. It was a very sad and painful moment for us. The function ended one day before the scheduled date on 9th Nov 2011.
