Trip to Chaukori

This is one trip we did in August 2008. Me with friends Saugata, Rakesh and Majhi decided to do a trip to Chaukori, a small hill station in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand.

Chaukori, at a height of 2010 m above sea level, offers breathtaking views of the Himalayas range from particularly the snowy peaks of the Nanda Devi and Nanda Kot.

First we purchased a Nest & Wings Map of Kumaon which has extensive information about everything a tourist wants for a successful trip. We started the 14th of August 2008 by the Midnight train Kathgodam Express from Haridwar. Reaching Kathgodam we decided to start our journey early and took a cab to Almora. By the time we reached there it had already started to drizzle. There we had very good food in a Punjabi Dhaba and started for the next leg of the journey. At about 3.00 p.m we were able to get a bus which was going to Pithoragarh. The bus passed through dense pine and Deodar forest. The rain followed us where ever we went. It was almost night when we reached Berinag. There was not a soul in the roads. A dim light could be seen in a window looking over the road.

The owner welcomed us and arranged for a comfortable stay in his guestroom. We were tired by then from our long journey. The night was cold and the evening rains added to the chill. Strange sounds from the dark hills used to break the silence of the night and sent shivers down my spine.

The next day, we woke up to find a sun kissed morning welcoming us. It gave us the much needed enthusiasm to start exploring the place. We took a cab and went to Chaukori tea estate. There were the leeches and caught our feed, started feeding on our blood. Suggest to keep away from tea gardens in rainy season. It ws all green there..Could not forget the charm. After that we returned to Berinag and went to the Shiva temple atop the hill. Next day we returned by bus with our cameras full of photos and hearts filled with joy..
